I'm absolutely petrified of giving oral presentations. I have given a couple in the past and really the only saving grace then was that EVERYONE was pretty terrible at it. But now I'm in a full fledged university where the professor is expecting everyone to research their topic into the ground and not only that but also be able to answer questions from other students really well. Worse yet, the subject is Life Sciences, and there will be subjects like the issues of Cloning, Stem Cell research, etc… and worse YET is that I am a Christian and my views towards issues such as those are against 99% of the population…. I am so terrified of this course >.<
I'm really shy, that is the main reason I am so terrible at oral presentations. Despite my fairly gifted mind, I am unable to present in words what I think, I don't know why, I just can't. I'm fine on forums such as here, or writing essays, but when it comes to talking I completely and utterly fall flat.
Just do it. You should have no trouble defending your views if they are based in science.
The reason professors make you do it is you will HAVE to do this in the work place. College is prep for work!

Horaayy..there are 3 comment(s) for me so far ;)
I know what you mean, I am an international student and had to give a presentation last semester. because of my accent people usually need some time to get used to it, in order to understand everything i say, so i was pretty worried lol but it went great. just think of what you wanna say, i'm sure you will be able to answer all the questions if you know the topic and studied for this class.practise a bit and you'll be fine. about that your opinion might be different from others, well you have a right to think so and at least in America you can say what you really think and know that in most cases it will be respected. its not high school to think and say things your teacher wants you to say, if you can prove your point of view, then you are all set.
good luck

I think most kids in college are fearful of giving speeches. My political science teacher the moment I walked into class on the FIRST DAY made me get up on stage and start ad libbing!!!! And this was a huge class of about 70+. The way to get prepared is to do it on front of family and friends. Try to do it in front of people you dont know mixed with people you know and trust. I felt strangely nervous, but the edge wore off and I was comfortable after awhile. You will feel the same way when you go on front of your class. Try to get it over with near the beginning if possible, but dont go first. The longer you wait, the more agonizing the wait becomes. Good luck! And dont worry about your ideology of that professor, make a stand for your beliefs.
